Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on technique that uses a light touch to examine membranes and movement of the fluids in and around the central nervous system. Relieving tension in the central nervous system promotes a feeling of well-being by eliminating pain and boosting health and immunity.
How Does It Work?
The craniosacral system includes the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. The therapist uses a soft touch -- generally about the weight of a nickel -- to release restrictions in the craniosacral system to improve the functioning of the central nervous system.
What Can It Help With?
- Chronic pain
- Migraines and headaches
- Stress and tension
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Sleep disorders
- Fibromyalgia
- Neck and back pain
What to Expect in a Session
A typical CST session lasts about an hour. You remain fully clothed and lie on a comfortable treatment table. The therapist will gently touch various parts of your body to monitor the rhythm of the fluid pulsing around your brain and spinal cord. Soft manipulative techniques are then used to release restrictions.
Most people experience deep relaxation during the session. Some feel a sense of warmth, gentle pulsing, or subtle shifts in their body.
Is It Safe?
Craniosacral therapy is very safe and non-invasive. It is suitable for people of all ages, from newborns to the elderly. However, it should not replace medical treatment for serious conditions.
